Super Tuscan wines origin from the undertaking of some producers who have decided to make wines not included in the DOC mark reflecting the characteristics of the area of production. They obtain low output from each hectare, using new kinds of barrels and vines, which are not included in the DOCG marks but offer good results. Thanks to these experiments and researches they make high-quality wines which exceed DOC and Riserva in price and value.
Super Tuscan production is spreading rapidly. Among these wines we mention Sassicaia (that is a Cabernet Sauvignon produced in southern Tuscany near Bolgheri), which has been the first example; Tignanello, the ancestor of many high-quality wines, obtained mixing Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Solaia.
Thanks to Super Tuscan, Italian enology has renewed and following this example high-level wines are produced in all Italy, even if they are not included in the DOC mark.
